The Mathews High School cross country team held its season opener this past Wednesday at Gloucester’s Beaverdam Park. The Blue Devils lost many seniors from the team, especially on the boys’ side. This took some adjustment and brought a new perspective to this season for them. The boys fell short, losing 41-42, to King William, with other teams including Westmore-land, Rappahannock and Northampton putting up a hard fight. Adam Greve placed second overall with a time of 19:04 and Ivar Golden, not far behind, came in at 19:23. Next for the Devils was Kristopher Diggs with a time of 20:48, Grayson Clements (21:15), Bryce Larson (21:48), Cole Christensen (22:09), Elton Hudgins (22:29), Lincoln Williams (26:20), and Camdon Clements (JV) (26:55). The boys were disappointed in their standings and are ready to take back that number-one spot.
