MHS crew places at state regatta

In its first state championships in two years, the Mathews High School crew brought home a silver medal, two bronzes and a fourth-place finish.

Mathews entered four boats—the women’s senior double and quad and the men’s senior single and junior four—in Saturday’s Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association state championships at the Sandy Run Regional Park in Occoquan.

Mandy Moran and Lillian Copeland took home the silver medal. Competing in the women’s double, they came in first in their trial heat. In the six-boat final, they came in second behind Albemarle. Scarlet Johnson, Annalise Morse, Lily Baucom and Macy Johnson, meanwhile, earned bronze medals in the women’s quad.

Cole Wheeler earned the team’s other bronze medal, competing in the men’s single. Ben Stroud, Alex Slavkovic, Calvin Burton, Jaxon McDonald and coxswain Savannah Hartlove qualified for the finals in a field of 12 junior fours, finishing just out of the money in fourth place, less than five seconds behind bronze...
