MHS Business Law students tour courthouse

Mathews High School’s Business Law students recently saw the judicial system in action on a field trip to the Mathews County courthouse.

During the Oct. 28 trip, students visited with the Circuit Court Clerk, Commonwealth’s Attorney, and witnessed Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey W. Shaw preside over cases.

At the clerk’s office, Circuit Court Clerk Angie Ingram taught the students how to find important documents such as deeds, plats, wills and marriage licenses. After the court session was over, Judge Shaw answered questions from the students about what they had seen and heard.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Tom Bowen joined the students for a pizza lunch in the jury room. He fielded questions about how the court system works and how cases are brought to trial. ...
