MHS boys win York Classic

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team swept through the York Classic Holiday Tournament last week, winning both games to take the championship.

On Thursday, the Blue Devils defeated the host York Falcons by a 60-48 margin, setting up Friday night’s showdown with Denbigh High School.

The championship game lived up to the hype. Trailing by seven points going into the final quarter, the Mathews defense shut down the Patriots holding them to a mere two points to take the win, 54-51.

“I’m so proud of the team,” MHS head coach Curtis Williamson said. “Everyone played hard, but Braden Hunley and Landon Green were all over the place” in that crucial fourth quarter.

The Mathews High School boys’ basketball team returns to action on Monday, hosting Essex. The junior varsity game begins at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity contest following immediately after.
