MHS boys win tournament at Dream Fields

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team won last week’s tournament at Dream Fields in Lancaster with victories over Northern Neck foes Northumberland and Washington and Lee.

On Tuesday, Mathews fell to the home-standing Rappahannock Raiders, 6-1. Mathews struck early, with an RBI single from Jalen Matthews in the top of the first inning. The Blue Devils were up 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when the Raiders began a little run.

Mathews won last Thursday’s opener in dramatic fashion, with Cody Tunstall hitting a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth to give the Devils a 3-2 win.

The Devils had a tough start defensively, giving up one unearned run in the top of the first inning, but buckled down, tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second.
