MHS boys win Tidewater District cross country title

The Mathews High School boys’ cross country team earned the title of Tidewater District champions after coming in first in last Wednesday’s district championship meet, which was held at Gloucester’s Beaverdam Park.

The MHS girls, meanwhile, placed third overall in the meet that also included teams from King William, Middlesex and West Point. As a team, the Mathews boys placed first with 28 points, while the girls finished with 58 points.

Coming in first overall and shattering his own personal best was Chance Higginbotham, who completed the course in 16:39. Blake Hunley came in not too far after with a time of 17:20.

Next for the Devils were Jon Jenkins (with a time of 17:31), Salvador Cardenas (18:42), Ivar Golden (18:44), Dominic Winters (18:46) and Adam Greve (19:07).

For the girls, Elizabeth Moore came in first with a time of 22:54 and Allean Rowe came in soon after with a time of 23:16. Next for the Lady Devils were Kylee Swanson (with a time of 24:11), Morgan Stearns (24:52), Jordan Sadeg (25:09), Lyla Duff (25:25), and Keira Cannon (26:51). While the girls didn’t have the results that they wanted, they are ready to prove to themselves and others of what they are capable of.

The Devils will continue their season at the West Point Country Club today, Thursday, Oct. 30, in the regional championships.
