In the final meet before the regional tournament, the Mathews High School boys’ indoor track team placed first out of 22 teams from Virginia and North Carolina.
The MHS boys amassed 75 team points to dominate the meet, with the Devils’ nearest competitor, at 45 points, from Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. The Lampert Timing Indoor Track Meet #8, hosted by Norfolk Academy, was held on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at the Boo Williams Sportsplex, Hampton.
The MHS girls, meanwhile, came in 14th place with 18 team points.
For the MHS boys, Keith Taylor qualified for states in both the high jump and triple jump, taking third in both events. Donovan Forrest set a PR in the 55-meter hurdles; he placed second in both that event and the 55-meter dash.Gavin Dustin brought home the only individual first-place finish for Mathews, winning the 1,000-meter run. The boys’ 4x800-meter relay team also placed first.
