MHS boys win district track crown; girls place 2nd

After not competing for two weeks due to a bye week and inclement weather, the Mathews High School track teams traveled to West Point on May 10 for the Tidewater District Championship.

Overall, the boys’ team scored 151 points to capture its first Tidewater District Championship in more than two years. The girls’ team fought hard and scored 131 points to finish second behind Middlesex.

Girls turning in notable performances were Rileigh Betz who received the Most Outstanding Participant award for her victories in the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, and the 1600m run; the girls’ 4x800m relay team (Tiffany Condron, Lizzie Stokes, Lauren Bland and Skylar Lewis) won with a new school record of 11:40; Lewis won the 3200m run with a time of 14:27, and Lauren Bland won the 800m run with a time of 2:44.

For the boys, Elijah Willis won the 200m dash with a time of 23.44; Caleb Carson won the 1600m run with a time of 4:48; Jalen Thomas won the 800m run with a time of 2:07; Corey ...
