MHS boys’ teams collect wins at Charles City

In a busy week for Blue Devil basketball, the Mathews High School boys took on the King William Cavaliers, Essex Trojans and Charles City Panthers. Following losses to King William and Essex, the MHS boys’ teams bounced back to collect wins over the Panthers. King William In last Thursday’s home game against the visiting Cavaliers, what started out as a close JV contest turned into a bit of a rout in the second half. Trailing 19-14 at halftime, Mathews let the game slip in the final two quarters, falling 49-20. The JV Devils’ leading scorer was sophomore Elton Hudgins with six points, all scored in the third quarter. Sophomore Treye Church had a well-rounded performance with four points, eight rebounds, two steals, two assists, and two blocks. Also standing out was sophomore Corey Zheng with eight rebounds, four points, and two steals.
