The Mathews High School varsity baseball team scored a pair of lopsided victories last week over Charles City and Northampton.
Charles City
Last Thursday, the Blue Devils hosted Charles City, shutting out the visiting Panthers, 30-0. It was an excellent performance by the Mathews pitching staff with senior Colin Moore and freshman Liam Penick throwing the combined shutout.
Moore threw the first three innings, striking out six batters and allowing only one hit, recording the win. Penick entered to relieve Moore, pitching the last two innings, striking out three batters.
The Blue Devils were strong in the field recording an error-free game. They were seeing the ball well at the plate, collecting 20 hits on the day. Standout players on offense were senior Cam Matthews, junior Blake Hunley, and freshman Treye Church. Each batted in four runs while collecting two hits apiece. Other offensive leaders were senior Tre Greene and freshman Hunter Horsley, each with three RBIs.
