Two weeks into the 2019 season, the Mathews High School varsity baseball team holds a 1-3 record, with the only win coming March 14 in a 2-1 walk-off victory over the visiting Rappahannock Raiders.
Mathews also dropped a pair of games to the Northumberland Indians and fell Tuesday to Washington and Lee, 14-3.
Mathews kicked off its season March 12 against the Northumberland Indians. Starting pitcher for Mathews was Christian Williams who recorded seven outs allowing zero hits and zero runs over two-and-a-third innings, striking out seven. Zach Dehoux and Haden Higginbotham entered in relief, throwing three and one-thirds innings while allowing two runs.
Although the Blue Devils were solid on defense, they came up short in their season opener losing, 2-1. The Blue Devils offense was led by Tyler Moore and Higginbotham each having one hit.
