MHS boys headed to state basketball tournament

 

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team is headed to the state tournament.

Mathews earned a bid to the Group 1A state tournament after defeating Riverheads, 62-43, in front of a hometown crowd in Tuesday’s regional semifinals. The Devils will travel to Cumberland tonight to face Lancaster in the Region 1A East semifinal game.

But regardless of the outcome of that contest (or this Saturday’s regional championship), Mathews is advancing to the VHSL 1A state quarterfinals on Friday, March 3, at Virginia High School in Bristol as the top four teams from the east and west regions face off. The state semifinals will be held on the following day, Saturday, March 4. The state championship game is scheduled for Thursday, March 9, at the VCU Siegel Center in Richmond.

To get to this point, the Blue Devils posted wins over King and Queen, Central Lunenburg and Carver Academy to secure the Conference 42 championship. The road to the conference title began...
