MHS boys head back into playoffs

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team, defending VHSL Class 1 co-champions, are headed back into post-season play looking to reclaim that title.

The top-seeded Blue Devils were scheduled to face the Charles City Panthers Wednesday night in the opening round. Results were not available at press time.

Mathews and Charles City met twice in the regular season, with the Devils winning by scores of 72-43 and 75-57. If they win on Wednesday night, the MHS boys will host the regional championship on Friday night.

With last Thursday’s contest against Gloucester canceled, Mathews ended its regular season the following night, defeating the Rappahannock Raiders on the road, 68-33.

The Devils played strong defense and rebounded well in the lopsided victory, according to MHS head coach Curtis Williamson.
