After capturing the Conference 42 title and winning the first round of regional play, the Mathews High School boys’ basketball team’s season came to an abrupt end on Friday night, as the Devils lost, 78-38, to Surry in the Group 1A VHSL regional semifinals.

Surry went on to fall to Altavista, 79-50, the following night for the regional title. Both teams advance to Friday’s state semifinal games at Salem Community College. The title game will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, at the VCU Siegel Center. ...
