MHS boys fall to Red Devils, Eagles

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team competed in a Spring Break tournament at the Dream Fields sports complex in Lancaster during the past weekend. Mathews fell to the host Lancaster Red Devils, 12-4, in last Thursday’s opener, and dropped the second contest to the Washington and Lee Eagles on Saturday, 16-4.

In the opener, Mathews jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but in the bottom of the second inning that changed in a matter of seconds as the Red Devils scored eight two-out runs to take a commanding lead.  

The Blue Devils struggled to make routine plays throughout the game, and outhit Lancaster seven to six, but fought with runners in scoring.

On Saturday, Mathews made five errors in the first inning, resulting in five Eagle runs. This continued as the Blue Devils again did not execute routine plays on defense while the pitchers worked hard to find the strike zone.
