MHS boys dominate King and Queen

The Mathews High School boys’ basketball teams posted a pair of lopsided victories last Friday against King and Queen; the varsity team crushing the visiting Tigers, 61-34, and the JV squad winning by a 19-point margin, 52-33.

The varsity Devils came out with lots of energy and a tough, full-court press. By the end of the opening quarter, Mathews had a 12-point lead. The second quarter was much the same, although the Blue Devils had to drop back into a half-court defense to conserve energy. At halftime, the lead blossomed to 32-12. King and Queen made a run in the fourth quarter, scoring 17, but that wasn’t enough to make a serious challenge.

Top scorer Stuart Anderson Jr. ended the night with 20 points. He was followed by Jarius Monroe (nine), Will Hutcheson (eight), Elijah Willis and Ethan Armistead (both with five), Jalen Matthews, Christian Williams, Tylon Forrest and Sawyer Hutson (three points each) and Payton Blake (two points).
