MHS boys beat Middlesex, Carver in conference games

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team picked up a pair of Conference 42 victories last week, beating Middlesex last Wednesday, 57-34, and pulling out a 64-54 win on Friday against Carver Academy.

In the Middlesex game, Mathews jumped out to a quick lead sparked by Ethan Armistead, who made four three-pointers in quick succession, giving the Devils an 18-point lead at the half. From then on the teams played fairly evenly, and matched each other basket for basket. Middlesex was never able to start a run of its own, and could not overcome the Blue Devils’ large, early lead.

Stuart Anderson Jr. was the Devils’ top scorer with 17 points. Armistead followed with 14. Others contributing to the win included Jarius Monroe (10 points), Elijah Willis (nine), Tylon Forrest (four), Jalen Matthews (two) and Christian Williams (one).
