MHS boys beat Eagles, Panthers, fall to Dukes

In a busy week for the Mathews High School boys’ basketball team, the Devils posted victories over Washington and Lee and Charles City and suffered an 11-point defeat at the hands of the Gloucester Dukes.

Mathews controlled the tempo through much of the Dec. 6 game against Washington and Lee, defeating the Eagles by nine points at the final buzzer, 58-49.

Leading scorers for the night were Stuart Anderson and Ethan Armistead, who both had 15 points. They were followed by Jarius Monroe who scored 10, Elijah Willis who scored six, and Jalen Matthews, Sawyer Hutson and Will Hutcheson who added four points each.

On Friday, the Dukes traveled to Charles City and dominated the Panthers on the way to a 59-27 victory. Anderson was once again the top scorer, this time with 21 points. He was followed by Willis and Tylon Forrest who both had eight, Ethan Armistead who had seven, Hutcheson who had six, Monroe and Christian Williams who both had four, and Matthews who had one point.
