MHS boys advance in tournament

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team is moving on in the Conference 42 tournament after beating the visiting King and Queen Tigers, 77-64, in Tuesday’s quarterfinal matchup.

With the win, the Devils will face the winner of the Central Lunenburg/Carver Academy game tonight. The Devils, the #2 seed in the tournament, will host tonight’s contest, to be played at the conclusion of the MHS girls’ tournament game, which begins at 6 o’clock.

If the Mathews boys win tonight, they are guaranteed a spot in the 1A East regional tournament, scheduled for next week.

Against King and Queen on Tuesday night, the Devils came out firing and jumped out to a 22-8 lead, moving the ball well offensively. Some sharp shooting allowed for Mathews to extend its lead, making them even more comfortable heading into halftime up 34-17. The second half was more of the same as some key shooting in the third quarter allowed for some of the Devils to come off the bench...
