MHS booters close out season with back-to-back wins

Mathews High School’s varsity soccer team ended its regular season with wins over Carver Academy, 2-1, and Washington and Lee, 5-0. The wins gave Mathews a record of 5-10 overall, 4-6 in the region; the Devils qualified. for the regional tournament, which starts next Wednesday, May 23 at Franklin High School.

Against Carver last Wednesday, Mathews got on the scoreboard halfway through the first half. A cross from Jaysen Hall was put past the goalie by Jonny McCann. Mathews continued its pressure and scored again minutes later on another goal from McCann, this time off of the assist from Will Hutcheson.

Carver countered with seconds remaining in the first half, scoring from straight ahead inside the 18’. In the second half the Blue Devils maintained possession but struggled to convert. A fingertip save by goalie Jackson Putt in the final minutes preserved the win.
