MHS baseball undefeated in conference play

Mathews baseball picked up a big win to stay undefeated in conference play last Thursday against West Point, but dropped a non-conference affair at Nandua the following Monday.

With a perfect conference record, the varsity Devils headed to West Point to continue the success they found against the Pointers at home. The game quickly landed in the Devils’ favor, as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first. With a great start from Willie Fernald (five innings, three strikeouts, two earned runs), the Devils never looked back and went on to defeat the Pointers, 8-2. The main offensive producers were Logan Byrns and William Smith, who each collected two hits, and Zach Jarosz, Paul Burnette and Smith, who had two RBIs each. The win was credited to Fernald, aided by relief pitching by Colin Cook, who threw two no-hit innings.
