MHS baseball picks up win over Lancaster

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday, shutting out Lancaster 1-0 in extra innings.

Ryan Ewell put on a wonderful performance, pitching a complete game with 17 strikeouts. The game remained scoreless through seven innings, although Lancaster threatened to score several times but was halted by tremendous defense. Daniel Mitchem saved a possible run from scoring in the seventh inning with a great play at second base.

As the Mathews boys went into the eighth inning, the offense went to work with Josh Wilson hitting a sacrifice fly to drive in Chris Davis. Once again in the eighth, the defense supported Ewell with catcher Austin Kemp making a great play to throw out a runner at second to silence the Lancaster offense.

Mitchem, Davis, Austin Kemp and Deondre Foster all added base hits for Mathews.
