MHS baseball falls to Cavaliers

The Mathews High School varsity baseball season came to an end last Thursday at King William, as the Devils fell to the Cavaliers 4-3 in the Tidewater District championship game.

In the fourth contest between these two teams this year, Mathews jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Cavaliers responded with three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth.

As in many games before, MHS would mount a comeback in the seventh inning, but the comeback fell short, with the Devils scoring only one run.

With the loss, Mathews finished as the Tidewater District Tournament runners-up. Leading the Blue Devil offense were Chris Davis (2-for-3, double, triple), Daniel Mitchem (2-for-2, double), Ryan Ewell (1-for-4), Paul Burnette (1-for-2), Austin Kemp (1-for-3) and Quentin Schaefer (1-for-3).
