MHS baseball beats Chargers, Cavs

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team posted two wins in recent action—beating Middlesex, 10-4, last Thursday and dominating the King William Cavaliers on Tuesday, 9-5.

Against the Chargers, Zach Dehoux made his varsity pitching debut, holding Middlesex to one unearned run until the fourth inning, when the Chargers scored twice for a 3-2 lead.

The Devils answered with eight runs as they batted around in the top of the fifth to pull ahead.

After the top of the fifth, the game slowed down as Haden Higginbotham and Brandon Williams combined for three shutout innings and Higginbotham got the win. Williams, Patrick Blake, Brent Smith and Ethan Armistead had two hits apiece as the Devils collected 14 hits as a team.
