MHS athletic department being restructured; some critical of move

With fall sports getting underway this week at Mathews High School, the division is in the midst of restructuring its athletic department following last month’s resignation of the school’s athletic director.

At its July meeting, the school board accepted the resignation of MHS athletic director Derek Kibler and assistant AD Lindsay Newell—both of whom have gone on to accept positions at Gloucester High School.

In the restructuring, MHS assistant principal Alexis Foster will take on the newly created position of “activities director,” in addition to his other duties at the school, according to Superintendent of Schools Nancy Welch.

Helping Foster will be two assistant athletic directors, Welch said, as well as a support staff person and a stipend for an employee to keep up with maintenance of the school’s athletic fields.
