MHS athletes compete in state meet

The Mathews High School track and field team traveled to James Madison University to compete in the VHSL Class 1 state championships on Friday.

Both boys and girls competed to the fullest and gave their all, which showed in their results. The Devils dealt with several injuries over the weekend, but still persevered and represented the Mathews name with pride.

For the girls, Elizabeth Moore placed seventh, medaling, in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 13:06.74 and placed 11th in the 1,600-meter run. Nora Suthard placed ninth in the triple jump finals with a mark of 34’3.5”. Unfortunately for the girls, Suthard and Shalan Deese suffered injuries which led their scratching out of their own events and the girls’ 4×400-meter relay where Jordan Sadeg and Allean “Beanie” Rowe would have competed with them.

Deese attempted the high jump, but due to her injuries didn’t meet the height, still putting up a hard fight.

For the boys, Jon Jenkins placed 16th in the 3,200-meter run. Ivar Golden placed 18th in the 3,200-meter run. The boys’ 4×800-meter relay team, which included Adam Dustin, Chance Higginbotham, Justin Pressnell and Adam Greve, placed sixth, with a time of 8:44.86, medaling. The boys’ 4×400-meter relay team, which included Dustin, Higginbotham, Jenkins and Greve, placed 15th.

The Blue Devils had a roller of a season and are happy to end it at States, feeling proud of their accomplishments.
