Memorial Day

American Legion posts in Gloucester and Mathews will hold separate Memorial Day observances on Sunday afternoon in the two counties. The public is invited to both ceremonies.

Jack White, chairman of the Mathews County Board of Supervisors, will be the guest speaker at the 2 p.m. service at Post 83 headquarters in Hudgins; while, an hour later, Army Lt. Col. Kay Wakatake from Fort Eustis will be the featured speaker at the Post 75 ceremony on the steps of the Gloucester courts building.

White, who has served on the county board since 2014, is a small businessman/oyster farmer/attorney. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business economics from Virginia Tech and a J.D. degree from the George Mason University School of Law.

Following White’s speech, Post 83 will honor members who have died in the past year with a Bell Ceremony. The program will conclude with an honor guard salute and the playing of “Taps.”
