Memorial Day services to be held Sunday locally

Gloucester and Mathews will join the rest of the nation this weekend to pay tribute to America’s war dead during Memorial Day services on Sunday afternoon. The Mathews ceremony will be held at 2 p.m., with the Gloucester program starting an hour later.

In Mathews

American Legion Post 83, Mathews, will hold its ceremony at the post headquarters on Route 198 in Hudgins. Sheriff L. Mark Barrick will be the guest speaker.

Following his presentation, the post will conduct a bell ceremony in honor of Legionnaires who passed away in the past year. Graveside flags will be available for attendees. The program will end with the firing of a gun salute. A social hour with light refreshments will follow. For details, call 725-7422.

In Gloucester

American Legion Post 75 will be in charge of the Gloucester Memorial Day service, which begins at 3 p.m. at the Gloucester County Veterans’ Memorial Wall, which is in front of the new courthouse building.
