McCartney to speak on Revolutionary War spy

Martha W. McCartney, noted research historian, will give a public presentation on “James Lafayette Master Spy of the American Revolution” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23 at Mathews Memorial Library, 251 Main Street.

A Mathews County resident, McCartney is a research historian and has been a consultant to Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, the National Park Service, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and several colleges and universities. She has extensive archival experience in major repositories in the U.S., Great Britain, Bermuda, Ireland and 50-plus city and county courthouses throughout the commonwealth, largely providing support to the archaeological community.

A graduate of The College of William and Mary, McCartney’s published works include 14 books, one of which is “Mathews County, Virginia: Lost Landscapes, Untold Stories.” She has received several historic preservation awards.
