May Faire celebration returns May 5

May Faire 2018, celebrating Mathews County’s rich history and culture, will be held on Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the historic court green.

The event, which is also a celebration of spring, will include dancing, singing and eating, all reminiscent of the classic fun and traditions of the 1950s.

Aside from the hoisting of the Maypole and the crowning of this year’s Queen and King, the celebration will include fine art, traditional crafts, heritage demonstrations, a farmers’ market, live music and 1950s-era backyard games for children. There will also be a pound cake contest.

According to a release, the Court House Players will also perform three different 1950s-themed musicals and cars and trucks from the ’50s and ’60s will be on display. May Faire re-enactors will stroll the grounds in their poodle skirts and leather jackets and later in the day, the May Pole dancers from the Bayside Youth Ballet will perform.
