MAXINE BLAKE

Maxine Blake of Wake, Virginia, passed away peacefully at Riverside Hospital surrounded by her family on Jan. 12, 2017.

She was born on April 29, 1937 in Glass, Virginia, to the late Willie and Betty Coates. She was the seventh of 10 children of which eight preceded her in death.

Maxine grew up in a waterman’s town and cherished the livelihood that the water provided for her as she grew up and carried those values throughout her life. In 1951, she met the love of her life, Sheldon, and they married and began their lives together in 1953.

Maxine was a loving wife, mother, and granny. She was competitive and enjoyed winning when playing any type of game. Her favorite baseball team was the Atlanta Braves and she spent many hours cheering for them to win. She loved cooking and providing favorite dishes for the ones she loved. Maxine was strong-willed with a never-give-up attitude which stayed with her throughout her life. She was dedicated to her family and protective of those close to her.

Maxine is survived by her husband of 64 years, Sheldon; sons, Donald and Wayne (Angela) and grandchildren, Vail, Chris, Kamryn and Kristin; brother, Willie Coates Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
