Mathias returns to head up local State Police office

Trooper Gregory T. Mathias has returned to the Area 33 Virginia State Police Office in Gloucester with the rank of first sergeant. Mathias takes over the local office from 1st Sgt. Caren Sterling, who has joined the VSP Professional Standards Unit.

Mathias has been a trooper for 17 years and was last assigned to the Gloucester office between 2003 and 2012 when, as a sergeant, he left to join the professional standards unit. He remained there until May 2013 went he was promoted to first sergeant and moved to the drug enforcement section based in Chesapeake.

Throughout his transfers, Mathias has maintained his home in Mathews where he resides with his daughter, who attends Thomas Hunter Middle School. “I’m glad to be back,” he said of returning to the Gloucester office.

Mathias said Sterling put in to go to professional standards at about the same time he asked to return to this area, so both were granted their transfers. As first sergeant for the Area 33 Office, Mat...
