Mathews YMCA moves step closer to new facility

The Mathews Family YMCA’s capital campaign for a new building has been an open secret for a while now, but when the project recently got a big boost in the form of $150,000 from the Cabell Foundation, the news just had to be shared.

The YMCA released that information last week, letting the public know that the Mathews and Middlesex sites would each receive half of a $300,000 challenge grant to help with facility upgrades.

For the Y, that means coming a step closer to realizing the dream of moving out of the 2,500-square-foot former day care center it has occupied since opening in February 2002 and into a proposed 13,000-square-foot building.

The site of the proposed facility is located near the corner of Route 198 and Cricket Hill Road, adjacent to Donk’s Theater and across the street from the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad.
