Members of Mathews Yacht Club represented Mathews County during last month’s Sail250 Virginia celebration in Norfolk, serving as part of the official escort for two of the world’s tall ships. Five MYC boats carrying more than 42 members and guests participated in the June 19 Parade of Sail, escorting the Spanish Navy training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano and the Chilean Navy training ship Esmeralda into Norfolk Harbor. The event featured more than 40 tall ships from around the world, creating the largest gathering of tall ships in the region in nearly a century. As the flotilla passed the reviewing area, announcers recognized Mathews Yacht Club before thousands of spectators lining the waterfront. The celebration held special meaning for Mathews Yacht Club Commodore Katy Breuer and her husband, Captain Fernando Meléndez III of Deltaville.
