Mathews Y concludes successful summer sailing camp

  

The Mathews Family YMCA sailing program has finished another successful year, for the first time using the facilities at the Mathews Yacht Club on Stutts Creek, and the young men who ran the program are taking a break before the school year begins.

Nineteen-year-old Karl Abrahamson and his cohorts, Dylan White, 15, and Carson Rozell, 18, operated six camps this summer, teaching dozens of boys and girls ages 8-18 how to rig and sail small one-design racing class sailboats such as Sailfish, Lasers and Optis.

The classes were mostly hands-on, with classroom time limited primarily to safety issues and teaching students what to do if they found themselves in trouble out on the water.

“Most of the classroom stuff is just so if something happens, we can tell them what to do and they understand, so they don’t hurt themselves,” said Abrahamson. “We stress that everything around a sailboat has the potential of an accident.”
