Mathews Y board member embarks on 1,000-mile hike

Mathews Family YMCA board member Carolyn White is embarking on a 1,000-mile hike on the Pacific Crest Trail in California next week, and she said she owes a big part of the credit to the support and training she received at the Y.

White will leave Wednesday, April 13 from Campo, Calif., near the Mexican border and plans to walk all the way to the shores of Lake Tahoe.

“I’ve been preparing for four months, researching, acquiring gear, and training,” she said. “You’ve probably seen me at the YMCA—the one pounding away at the treadmill with a determined look on her face. But had you told me three years ago that I would ever attempt such a thing, I’d have laughed, or cried, or both.”
