The Mathews High School wrestling team won the Region 1A East Tournament title, scoring 174.5 team points on Friday and Saturday in Buena Vista.

Mathews defeated Rappahannock County (154 points), host Parry McCluer (153) and Lancaster (129), among top finishers. Frank Taylor, in his first year as the Mathews head coach, also won Coach of the Year honors for Region 1A East.

Mathews had one first-place finisher, Parker Thompson (138 lbs.). Sam Moore (145 lbs.) and Cody Correll (152 lbs.) took second place. Caleb Sadler (106 lbs.), Caleb Johnson (120 lbs.), Joe Hall (182 lbs.) and Dominick Cummings (220 lbs.) took home bronze, while Mason Fiscella (170 lbs.) and Isaiah Maultsby (195 lbs.) placed fourth. Thompson went 3-0 in the tournament with two pins and a tech fall in the finals. Cummings went 3-1, with all his victories coming from pins.
