Mathews wrestlers beat Sussex, 48-28

The Mathews High School wrestling team defeated the visiting Sussex Central Tigers in a dual meet on Dec. 11, 48-28.

 

Due to forfeits, the two teams only wrestled eight matches, with the Blue Devils winning six (all by pin) and losing just two.

 

Scoring pins for Mathews were Caleb Johnson (113 lbs., 1:00), Sam Moore (138 lbs., 3:45), Parker Thompson (145 lbs., 1:01), Thomas Hall (160 lbs., 2:37), Austin Fravel (195 lbs., 1:47) and Isaiah Maultsby (220 lbs., 3:00). Tyler Zabel (152 lbs.) lost a major decision, 22-10, while Bill Riley (285 lbs.) was pinned in 1:38.

 

 

In exhibition bouts, Alex Thompson (145 lbs.) pinned his opponent in 1:39 and Cody Correll (145 lbs.) defeated his opponent, 9-4. Two eighth graders, Caleb Sadler and Chad Beattie, lost their exhibition bouts, but gained valuable experience.
