Mathews woman injured after tree falls on moving car

A Mathews County woman was injured Tuesday afternoon when winds brought a large tree branch down on her vehicle as she was driving on Main Street in Gloucester.

Vicky Gibson, 44, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital before being transferred to Riverside Regional in Newport News, according to First Sgt. Caren Sterling of the Area State Police Office.

Sterling said Gibson was driving a 2000 Chevy Cavalier east on Main Street when part of a large tree came down during a period of heavy wind and rain between 4:15 and 4:30 p.m. The large branch landed on the passenger compartment of Gibson’s car as she approached First Presbyterian Church.

Gibson was the only occupant of the vehicle. Sterling said she remained conscious throughout her extrication from the car.
