A Mathews woman died in a single-vehicle accident on East River Road on Tuesday, Nov. 5, according to the Virginia State Police. VSP spokesman Corinne Geller identified the victim as 35-year-old Christy L. Carlton.

Geller said Carlton was driving a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck on East River Road in Mathews when it ran off the right side of the road into a ditch and overturned near the intersection with Tick Neck Road. She said the truck caught fire and Carlton died at the scene.

Trooper Brandon Frye was called to the accident at 5:14 p.m., Geller said, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

This was the fourth traffic fatality of 2013 in Mathews County.
