Mathews wins three races at Occoquan

The Mathews High School crew enjoyed good results Saturday at the Darrell Winslow Regatta—the first of three planned trips to Occoquan this season.

In the team’s first event, Zach Payne, Cole Johnson, Phillip Machen, Andrew Merz and coxswain Lance South launched for the men’s first four trial heat. Taking first ahead of T.C. Williams and netting the fastest time (5:02.5) of both heats put them in lane four of the finals. The four took first among six boats in the final.

In the next MHS men’s event, Adrian Phillips, Gus Bauby, Matt Oliver, Tucker Blackwell and cox Trevor Thomas boated out for the men’s second four final. After a tight start, the boys pulled away and led the rest of the race winning with a time of 5:51.3, more than 10 seconds ahead of their nearest competitor.

On the Lady Devils’ side, Madisson Haynes, Ashley Payne, Alexa Daniels and Taylor Williams raced the women’s first quad final against Hylton and J.E.B. Stuart. The ...
