Mathews VRS forms junior rescue squad

Teenagers in Mathews now have the opportunity to gain some experience in handling emergency medical situations as part of Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad’s new junior squad.

Members of the squad will be able to respond on calls right along with experienced duty crews, said brothers Chris and Neal Hudgins, career advanced life support technicians and firefighters who have taken on the task of coordinating the youth squad, along with EMT Malcolm Conway. 

Working with technicians who’ve been assigned as their mentors, junior squad members will be trained in the location and use of all the equipment on the ambulance so they can assist on the scene of emergency situations, said Neal. They will also be assigned routine tasks to carry out around the squad house, and each will be trained in CPR and the use of the AED.

Certification as an EMT is limited to adults 18 and older, said Neal, so the youth members won’t be eligible to handle calls on their own, but can serve ...
