Mathews volleyball season gets underway

The Mathews High School volleyball season got underway with a scrimmage for both the JV and varsity teams at New Kent on Wednesday night.

Mathews will host a varsity-only jamboree on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Along with Mathews, participating teams will include Warwick, Warhill, Menchville and Lafayette.

Each team will play four matches, facing every other team in two set contests during the all-day event. Returning to the varsity squad this season are seniors Brittany Mitchem and Mariah Robinson, juniors Josey Bauby, Keely Crittenden, Hallie Duncan, Emily Sorey and Madison South, and sophomores Belle Massimino and Anne Stewart.

New this season are five freshmen: Victoria Bing, Sarah Brown, Caroline Crittenden, Mia Gillenwater and Madisyn Jackson.

The team’s first regular season match is scheduled for next Thursday, Aug. 27, against Essex at home. JV begins at 5:30 with varsity immediately following. ...
