Mathews volleyball beats Gloucester in straight sets


The Mathews and Gloucester varsity girls’ volleyball teams faced off last Thursday night, with the host Lady Devils scoring a big win over their Middle Peninsula neighbors.

Mathews won the match in straight sets by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-18. The victory improved the Devils’ record to 11-2 on the season; 3-0 in conference play. GHS, meanwhile, slipped to 7-4 with the loss.

Standouts for MHS included Hallie Duncan who tallied 11 kills, three digs, two solo blocks, one block assist and one ace, and Anne Stewart who had seven kills, three solo blocks, one block assist and a dig. Also adding kills were Brittany Mitchem with six, Mariah Robinson (three), Belle Massimino (two), and Madison South and Caroline Crittenden (one each).
