Mathews triumphs over Gloucester in volleyball

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team added two wins this week with victories over 5A Gloucester and 2A King William.

The contest with Gloucester last Wednesday was an extremely close one. Both teams showed up to play, hit the court hard, and fought through four difficult back-and-forth sets. Three of the four sets played were decided by two points.

MHS was able to pull off the victory in their home gym, in front of an enthusiastic crowd, 27-25, 25-23, 20-25 and 25-23. The thrill of the match left fans from both sides already eager and excited for their rematch in Gloucester on Monday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m.

Kai McCann led the Lady Devils in both kills and digs with 15 and 19 respectively. Madison South and Morgan Driskell followed McCann in kills with four each while Britney Mitchem and Anne Stewart each added three.
