Mathews track teams dominate district at meet

The Mathews High School track and field teams traveled to West Point to compete in, and dominate, the Tidewater district championship last week. The Mathews boys and girls teams placed first out of the four schools competing.

For the girls, MHS standouts included Emily Brown (second in the 400-meter dash and third in the 800-meter run), senior Katelyn Phillips (third place in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles), Nancy Barnhardt (first in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs), senior Stephanie Jeffers (second in the 3200-meter run), senior Christine Robbins (first in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, second in the long jump and triple jump), Jessica Nelson (first in the high jump), senior Katelyn Dehnert (first in the shot put), Kaylyn Kelly (first in discus) and senior Alyssa Belmore (third in the shot put).

The girls’ relay teams took second place in the 4x400 meter dash and third in the 4x100 meter dash.
