Mathews track teams compete at Gloucester Invitational

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams competed on Saturday at the Gloucester High School Track and Field Invitational.

Both teams did exceptionally well against bigger schools, with several athletes qualifying for regional meet in May. MHS girls who qualified for regionals were Maddy Hobert and Lizzie Stokes in the 3200-meter run, Ellie Gale in the 100m hurdles, Rileigh Betz in the 100m and 300m hurdles, and Casey Kelly in shot put.

The boys who qualified for the regionals were Jalen Thomas in the 800m and 1600m runs, Caleb Carson in the 1600m run, and Jordan Jenkins and Caleb Sadler in the 3200m run.

Notable placements and performances for the girls were: Kelly placing fourth in the shot put with a mark of 31’2”, Gale placing sixth in 100m hurdles with a time of 18.37, and Betz placing fifth in the 300m hurdles with a time of 54.47.
