Mathews top-seed singles, doubles stay unbeaten

Mathews Lady Blue Devils’ number-one singles player Connie Johnson continued her undefeated winning streak against Middlesex Chargers’ Maddie Green.

Johnson kept her streak alive by dominating Green, 6-1, 6-1, in the teams’ first district match. Johnson and her #1-seed doubles partner Kylie Berry also remained unbeaten, but those were the only bright spots as Mathews fell to the Chargers on Monday, 7-2.

In singles play, Berry fought hard against Virginia Reinhardt in some very long rallies but lost, 6-0, 6-0, in both of her sets. Faith Lewis of Mathews and Katie Brooke of Middlesex both played hard, but Lewis fell, 6-0, 6-0.

Number four singles for Mathews, freshman Taylor Wood, competed against Middlesex’s Maddie Hurd in a very intense match as Wood started off with the loss of the first set by a score of 6-3.
