Mathews to face Chargers in district tournament

After closing the regular season with back-to-back wins over the King and Queen Tigers, the Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team heads into post-season play tonight as the second-seeded team in the Tidewater District tournament.

Mathews will host the Middlesex Chargers, with the opening tipoff at 6 o’clock. The winner will advance to Saturday’s championship game at King William High School, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Blue Devils rounded out the regular season with a loss to the district-leading West Point Pointers, as well as the wins over King and Queen.

In last week’s West Point game, the Pointers jumped out to an early lead and never relented, beating Mathews 88-48.

Things went much better for the Blue Devils in the next two games, defeating King and Queen by scores of 79-65 and 65-59. In the first game, Josh Wilson and Taiwan Forrest were the leading scorers with 20 points each. Cody Kelly was close behind with an impressive 15 points.

In the second victory, Deondre Foster was the top scoring player, with 15 points. Dayshon Williamson and Forrest were close behind with 11 points each.
