Mathews tennis wins two more, has 9-2 season record

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team improved to 9-2 on the season this past week with a 9-0 win over Middlesex and an exciting 5-4 battle over 2A Bruton.

The Lady Devils’ only losses have come against 4A Warhill and 1A Rappahannock, both by 4-5 margins. Yesterday, the MHS girls were scheduled to finish the regular season with a home match against Middlesex, the same team they shut out last Wednesday.

Middlesex

Starting off the May 2 contest against the Chargers, top-seeded singles player Chloe Sanderson defeated Hannah Jackson, 6-4, 6-2. Sarah Brown kept it going for Mathews in the #2 spot, beating Bryna Rios, 6-0, 6-1.

Playing third seed, Anne Stewart defeated Mckenzie Wilson, 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Avery Betz, playing at the four spot against Brooke Kirby, used her powerful topspin strokes to win, 6-1, 6-2.
